Theatre Fun for the Whole Family (and it makes your kids smarter!)
Remember the first time you went to the theatre — the excitement when the lights came down and you embarked on a magical journey? How would you like to give your child an experience of a lifetime while improving their academic achievements? Stimulate their hearts and minds with The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (PG-13), Pinkalicious, and Disney’s Tarzan — all coming to NoHo’s primo El Portal Theatre courtesy of producer Erik Austin and Kelrick Productions from San Luis Obisbo!
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (PG-13) directed by Kristin Towers-Rowles is a Tony-award winning musical that puts smart kids front and center. Although it’s easy to grasp the basics of a Spelling Bee and laugh at the funny jokes, something magical happens to kids in the audience when they recognize and empathize with the characters in the play as real kids they see at school.
Theater also enhances reading, by literally taking words and a story off the page, and presenting it as real people in a live presentation. It can actually encourage reluctant readers to see reading in a different way.
And that’s where Pinkalicious directed by Erik Austin and Sheila Guererro comes in! If you have a young child, you are no doubt familiar with the books by Victoria Kann. Kids just can’t get enough of the girl who can’t stop eating pink cupcakes. Imagine the delight when your children see Pinkalicious come to life onstage after reading the books. And because this show is designed for very young kids, you can even bring a 2-year-old to the theatre.
Disney’s Tarzan takes your kids on an exotic journey to Africa, highlighted by the driving soundtrack by rock star Phil Collins. The Tarzan story, originally written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, has been popular with children and adults for over a century. And, a fun fact for kids; the village of Tarzana in the San Fernando Valley is named for this fictional hero!
