The secret to surviving the frantic pace of holiday preparations is to find a quiet spot to relax and taste the good life. Europeans learned that secret long ago with the joie de vivre that fills their cozy cafés. Fortunately there’s a place that has that same joy of life atmosphere on Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank — the romancing the bean café.

The welcoming neighborhood café and dining establishment has been around for more than 20 years in Burbank, but owner Kerry Krull is now celebrating the one-year anniversary at its current location. It is more than a coffee shop, romancing the bean is a vibrant food and drink destination that has a personal boutique feeling for their guests.

Krull says, “I hear so many people tell me our place reminds them of a little café they went to in Paris, or that this belongs in a trendy New York neighborhood. We get comments like that all the time, and it’s nice that we can offer them the same experience in Burbank.”

The food is superb. Krull, a graduate of culinary school, knows how to excite the taste buds and offers the freshest ingredients available for the items on the impressive menu. There are plenty of health-conscious sandwiches, tasty salads with the emphasis on organic, soups, fresh-squeezed juices, smoothies (sans the sugar), and oh-so-yummy pastries and deserts.

“We support local growers and farms for much of our produce,” Krull says proudly. “Seasonal vegetables and fruits taste better. The heirloom tomatoes were exceptional this year, and now the heirloom beets are wonderful. We’ll be adding more holiday dishes, like butternut squash soups and things. It’s a lovely menu. People come in for more than just a cup of coffee.”

Local artisan bakers provide bread and pastries rich with flavor, made fresh daily. Gluten-free bread, hard to come by in any restaurant, is also available. There’s something for everyone, including vegans and vegetarians.

romancing the bean embraces “organic,” and their customers savor the tastiest boutique coffees (decaf too) and teas available anywhere, offered with soy or almond milk.

There’s a really great staff to make guests feel at home and comfortable in the unique neighborhood oasis designed by Kerry’s daughter Kendra (who has her degree in design). It’s a place to enjoy a relaxing moment during the day to dine leisurely alone or with friends, or grab a quick drink and a bite in-between holiday shopping. And there are gifts ideas at the café, include mood-enhancing coffee candles and more.

Great times are served daily, Monday thru Friday 7 to 7, Saturday and Sunday 8 to 5. romancing the bean is located at 3413 W. Magnolia Blvd. in Burbank. For more information call (818) 845-bean [2326], then go and enjoy life.
