Abbott Press has published The Poe Consequence, the debut novel by award-winning poet and lyricist Keith Steinbaum, which has an urban fiction take with a twisted detour into the supernatural realm of Edgar Allan Poe-like mysticism.
“For years I’ve worked numerous daytime hours in neighborhoods with nighttime gang problems,” says author Steinbaum. “I guess I was gathering material for my book without realizing it. Each morning I met our workers at an outdoor facility east of downtown L.A. that often showed signs of gang activity the night before. Certain events that happened during this time are reenacted in my story.”
It’s a compelling story that makes the reader interested and intrigued with characters that not only grow and change, but individuals you can empathize with. It tells the story about a section of Los Angeles where two rival gangs rule the streets. A year later, the Alvarado Street Diablos are still reeling from the murder of one of their closest members at the hands of their sworn enemies, the North Rampart Lobos.
A drive-by shooting in his honor is planned, but things go horribly wrong and an innocent bystander is the victim instead.
“It’s a story involving human nature with all of its elements as far as violence and personalities,” Steinbaum says. “Clashes, intermingling, and — on the other side – people who would never come together having these walls broken down where anything can happen. The unusual chemistry creates an interesting dynamic.
“It began as far back as 2002 and — on and off — I was developing the story and coming back to it when finally, in 2011, I made it what it is,” Steinbaum says.
This book is sharply written with real characters and reads very easily. An intricate plot and multi-faceted characters are what make The Poe Consequence a great read and a page-turner. A modern-day drama with a distinct Edgar Allan Poe flavor!
