Campo de Cahuenga Marks Historic Anniversary
On Sunday, Jan. 13, Councilmember Tom LaBonge served as Grand Marshal for the annual re-enactment of the signing of the 1847 Treaty of Cahuenga at the Campo de Cahuenga at 3919 Lankershim Blvd. The event, marking the 166th anniversary of the signing, included fiesta dancers, a firing of the howitzer cannon, food trucks, and a living history military encampment. Travel back in time through the centuries by visiting Campo de Cahuenga the first Saturday of every month from noon to 4 p.m.
Councilmember Tom LaBonge’s beautification team, in conjunction with the Bureau of Sanitation Bulky Item Crew, picked up Christmas trees and hundreds of palm fronds on Moorpark Street between Ethel and Fulton, as well as adjacent streets throughout Sherman Oaks last week.
The group picked up bulky items, litter, and debris. They also swept streets, sidewalks, alleys, and storm drains. The cleanup efforts continued on Saturday with more Christmas trees and bulky item pickups near Valley Vista and Ventura Boulevards.
Robert Moore: Light and Dark
The work of ceramic artists Peter Voulkos, Hans Coper, Roseline Delisle, and George E. Ohr challenged the idea of the vessel and its traditional characteristics of utility through geometric abstraction, handmade mechanical precision, and virtuosity over material. Their influence, within my practice as an artist potter, inspired interest in the utilitarian pot used solely for display. These “pots on display” can be taken off the mantle and used, but something else provided is of greater importance. This led me to a closer consideration of visual cues that signify “containership.”
Containership is a generic term for defining the purpose of a vessel. The context with which I am using this word will not be found in any dictionary, but appropriately denotes the capacity a vessel has for containment.
I was taught that the true form of a vessel lies within the interior shape, and trimming should be a realization of that shape mirrored on the exterior. The inside of a vessel relating to the outside is an expectation of “containership.”
Robert earned his Masters Degree of Fine Arts from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, Alfred, New York.
