Argo Wins Second “Made in Hollywood Award”

In a run-up to Argo’s big win yesterday, Los Angeles City Councilmember Tom LaBonge presented the second annual “Made in Hollywood Award” to CEO Barry Meyer and the crew of Argo in a ceremony on Thursday morning at Warner Bros. Studios. Argo is the sole film of the nine nominated for “Best Picture” at the 85th Academy Awards to have been filmed primarily in Los Angeles. “Argo is a great film that was shot in a great location: the City of Los Angeles,” Councilmember LaBonge said. “When filmmakers choose not to film in Los Angeles, we risk losing the creative force that makes Hollywood the entertainment capital of the world.” Of the 13 production weeks in Argo’s schedule, 10 took place in Los Angeles.

(Two took place in Istanbul and one in Washington, D.C.) In 2012, the “Made in Hollywood Award” was given for the first time to The Artist, which ultimately won “Best Picture” at the Academy Awards.

Argo has previously been honored by the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the British Academy Film Awards.

LaBonge Motion Approved to Impound Vehicles Used in Prostitution

On Tuesday, Feb. 19, the City Council adopted an ordinance that allows the City of Los Angeles to seize and impound vehicles used in the commission or attempted commission of pimping, pandering, illegal dumping of waste, or solicitation of prostitution. This effort was initiated by Councilmember Tom LaBonge’s motion introduced in March 2012. This new tool will allow law enforcement to address a growing issue within the City of Los Angeles. Such vehicle seizure measures have been found to be a strong deterrent to those who solicit prostitutes. This ordinance will be in effect within the next 45 days.

Fifth Annual Pasadena Festival of Women Authors

This prestigious event features four award-winning Southern California authors – Aimee Bender, Bo Caldwell, Gabrielle Pina, and Kathleen Sharp. Reyna Grande, who was chosen as the 2013 Writer-in-Residence for the program at Pasadena City College, will be the kick-off speaker. She was one of the Festival’s featured writers in 2010.

The Pasadena Festival of Women Authors brings together a group of diverse and well-published Southern California female authors to discuss their work with a group of enthusiastic people whose love of literature inspired the event. Their work includes fiction, non-fiction, and plays. The festival provides an intimate setting where authors and guests will be able to interact with each other and authors will be available to answer questions and sign their books for guests.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Pasadena Senior Center and the Pasadena City College Writer-in-Residence program. In the last four years, the Pasadena Festival of Women Authors has generated nearly $90,000 in donations. Last year from proceeds of the event, $2,000 was given to Pasadena City College to fund their first Writer-in-Residence program. Tickets for the festival are $85 per person and include lunch. Reserved tables of 10 are $1,000.
