Greetings! Councilmember LaBonge will convene a Community Public Safety Meeting with Capt. William Murphy and the LAPD on Wednesday, May 12 at 6 p.m. in the Ivanhoe Elementary School Auditorium. This meeting will bring together public safety officials and residents of Silver Lake, Los Feliz, Franklin Hills, and East Hollywood to address community concerns in light of recent crime trends. This week, Mayor Villaraigosa and Councilmember LaBonge demonstrated the first of 10,000 new “smart” parking meters to be installed citywide. The event in Los Feliz highlighted the convenience and reliability of the new technology, which replaces coin-only meters with modern, electronic Coin & Card meters in an effort to better serve the people of Los Angeles.
Last weekend was another great Big Sunday in Council District 4. Hundreds of volunteers worked on various projects throughout the district and across Los Angeles to help improve their communities. Thanks to everyone who helped out!
The historic Gilmore Adobe at Farmers Market was alive with music, food, and international fun last Thursday night at the 2010 Sister Cities of Los Angeles Kick-Off. The event brought together members of the Los Angeles Consular Corps and representatives of the 25 Sister Cities of Los Angeles to support this important cultural exchange program founded in 1959.

Saturday, May 8 is Fire Service Recognition Day. All neighborhood fire stations in the City of Los Angeles will host an Open House from 10 am – 4pm. The LAFD Historical Society will host its Annual Pancake Breakfast during Fire Service Recognition Day on May 8 from 9 am – 1 pm at 1355 N.
Cahuenga Blvd. in Hollywood. Fire Station 86 in Toluca Lake (4305 Vineland Ave., 91602) and the Toluca Lake Chamber of Commerce will host their 6th Annual Old Fashioned Pancake Breakfast to benefit the Widows and Orphans Fund on Saturday morning from 8 a.m. – 12 noon. The flyer is attached.
The Relay for Life Griffith Park Community, which is chaired by Mrs. LaBonge, is looking for volunteers to work short shifts at the event on Saturday, June 5 – Sunday, June 6. The Relay for Life Griffith Park Community will be held at the Mulholland Fountain, at Los Feliz Boulevard and Riverside Drive. The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council’s Relay for Life team will be holding a sign-up drive at the Silver Lake Library (2411 Glendale Blvd., 90039) on Saturday, May 8th from 10 am – 12 noon. Team Captain Joanna Paden and Relay Co-chair Jody Cherry will be on hand to help you sign up or answer any questions you might have about Relay for Life.
National Train Day 2010 is this Saturday, May 8. Los Angeles Union Station will host displays of train equipment, model trains, railroad history exhibits, and California Gold’s Huell Howser! The great USC Trojan Marching Band will provide music for the festivities, as well as Playhouse Disney’s Choo-Choo Soul with Genevieve. Go Metro to Union Station for this exciting annual event. Memories of a WWII Bombardier
The Gordon R. Howard Museum will be hosting a talk with Charles N. Stevens, the author of An Innocent Polebrook: A Memoir of an 8th Air Force Bombardier and The Innocent Cadet.
Charles N. “Norm” Stevens grew up in Inglewood, California. At 18 he joined the Army Air Corps, serving from April 1943 until October 1946. He flew as a bombardier on a B-17 in the 8th Air Force, 351st Bomb Group, at Polebrook, England during the summer and fall of 1944. He flew 34 bombing missions over Germany and occupied France, Belgium, and Holland. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.

25th Anniversary Staged Reading of The Normal Heart
The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Lily Tomlin/Jane Wagner Cultural Arts Center and veteran stage, television, and film actor David Youse are joining forces with Oscar® and Tony-award winner Joel Grey to present the historic 25th anniversary staged reading of Larry Kramer’s classic drama, The Normal Heart. This reading features some of the finest actors working today and will take place at Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse at 8 p.m. on Monday, May 17th., with a pre-performance at 6:00. Proceeds from the one-night-only event will benefit the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s Jeffrey Goodman Special Care Clinic, which provides quality, free or low-cost medical care for people living with HIV/AIDS (the event does not benefit the Geffen Playhouse).
New cast members Tim Bagley (Will & Grace), Dan Bucatinsky (All Over the Guy), and Alec Mapa (Ugly Betty) will join Lisa Kudrow, Clark Gregg, David Eigenberg, and Jon Tenney in the reading.
Developmental Checkup Weekend For Young Children
Free developmental checkups, courtesy of a grant from the Annenberg Foundation, will be available to any family that has concerned about their child’s development. Child Development Institute professionals will be on hand to administer screenings, answer parents’ questions, and share information about development. Checkups are available in Spanish and provided by CDI’s bilingual staff.
