Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park Breaks Ground On Synthetic Turf Soccer Fields

T32-Community News Van Nuys ParkTogether with the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and the Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering, Councilmember Tom LaBonge broke ground on three new synthetic turf soccer fields at the Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park on Saturday. The new synthetic fields will be easier to maintain, and usable all year round. New seating areas with benches will allow for an improved spectator experience and will provide players with a place to cool off. Councilmember LaBonge and his office identified the project as a top priority just two years ago. After successfully collecting nearly $2.7 million in funding, the project will add two full-sized and one small synthetic turf soccer field to VNSO, helping control maintenance costs and creating safe place for thousands of children to play.


Glendale Tabs Stephen Whittier as New Boys’ Water Polo and Swim Coach

Stephen Whittier was named Glendale’s boys’ water polo and swim coach July 9th. Whittier replaces Forest Holbrook, who held both positions and also served as the school’s girls’ aquatics coach the past five seasons before resigning in May to become an assistant principal at Crescenta Valley.

“I came away impressed watching them against Los Altos,” said Whittier, who coached the Temescal Canyon girls’ water polo team last season. “They had a bunch of excellent shooters and they knew how to attack.

Whittier, 29, will also teach history at Glendale. Lancaster said Glendale will look to fill the vacant girls’ aquatics coaching jobs soon.


Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority Elects New Officers

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, which owns and operates the Bob Hope Airport, elected new officers to its commission this week.

Steve Madison, representing Pasadena, was elected president, while Frank Quintero, representing Glendale, was elected vice president and Bill Wiggins, representing Burbank, was named secretary.

Madison was appointed to the commission in 2010 and has served as secretary and vice president previously.

Quintero was appointed in 2008 and has served as secretary, vice president and president in the past.

Wiggins joined the commission in 2001 and has served as secretary, vice president and president since then.

Each member will serve a one-year term in their posts.


Phil Wickham Coming to Maranatha High School in August

T32-Community News Phil WickmanTop Christian recording artist Phil Wickham will be performing live in Pasadena on Friday, August 22.  Maranatha High School is delighted to welcome this talented artist to the stage of the famous Ambassador Auditorium. His song, “This is Amazing Grace” recently hit the #1 spot with the national Christian audience.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit Elizabeth House, Door of Hope, and the Maranatha Missions Fund.

The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. with two popular local Christian bands, Urban Rescue and Talmadge, opening the show. Tickets are $25 for general admission. Tickets may be purchased online at www.maranatha-hs.org/philwickham. For questions or further information, please call (626) 817-4074.


Sherman Oaks Street Fair
