Tom LaBonge News DWP on the March Ballot

The City Council voted unanimously to add a ballot item for the March 2011 municipal election that would allow voters to amend the City Charter creating a watchdog office for the Department of Water and Power (DWP). If approved, the new Office of the Inspector General would include a Ratepayer Advocate, charged with investigating rate changes and allegations of DWP fraud.

Help Keep Libraries Open

Voters will decide to amend the City Charter to give a larger portion of the General Fund to the library department. The measure was introduced by LaBonge and Bernard Parks.

Guest Speaker

Los Angeles City Controller Wendy Greuel will be the guest speaker at a Community Meeting of the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association on Wednesday, November 17. The meeting, commending at 7:15 p.m., will be held at Notre Dame High School at 13645 Riverside Drive in Sherman Oaks.

New Pet?

The leaves are turning, the days are getting shorter and autumn is in the air. What better time to prepare for winter by adopting a warm, wiggly new pet from Best Friends Animal Society’s Fall Pet Super Adoption?

With approximately 600 dogs, cats, birds and bunnies to choose from, the event attracts an average of 8,000 visitors and a long list of pet-loving celebrities.

The event will take place this Sunday, November 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the La Brea Tar Pits, 5801 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles. There will be an amazing assortment of several hundred adorable adoptable animals from more than 40 local shelters and rescue groups. Dogs, cats, bunnies and birds of every breed, mix, age, color and size will be there, looking for their forever families.

Turkey for You

This Thanksgiving, Muse Lifestyle Group (Muse) will donate 718 turkeys to all residents of the Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (HCHC) on November 23. For the second year in a row, Muse (along with subsidiaries Playhouse Hollywood and Chi Dynasty), will commemorate Thanksgiving with their second annual turkey drive and festival. HCHC will be receiving the 700 plus turkeys, which will go to all HCHC residents, that is, low-income, previously homeless, seniors and HIV positive households.

This year’s event will take place at HCHC’s newest location, Orchard Gables located at 1277 Wilcox Ave. at Fountain Avenue.

BURBANK

Operation Gobbler Food Drive

Help bring Thanksgiving to needy families! The Burbank Jaycees is hosting Operation Gobbler and will be accepting food donations on behalf of the Burbank Temporary Aid Center (BTAC) at the Pavilions store located at 1110 W. Alameda Ave. in Burbank on Saturday, November 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donated items will be distributed to underprivileged families throughout the holiday season by BTAC.
