Neile Adams’ The Lives of Me, Cabaret at NoHo’s El Portal, May 24 & 25
Come to the cabaret! Direct from Paris, Neile Adams is bringing her cabaret show to NoHo’s historic El Portal Theatre. It is a sensational and sentimental songfest that had crowds flocking to a Moulin Rouge district jazz club in the City of Lights for a special engagement. Now NoHo audiences can enjoy Neile’s one woman musical celebration, featuring musical director Andy Howe, directed by Ted Sprague. There are two performances only on Saturday, May 24 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 25 at 3 p.m.
Along with wonderful classic songs and several rare gems, the singer-actress-dancer, who was the wife of movie icon Steve McQueen, will tell the fascinating story of her life. “Everyone has had tremendous joys and sorrows. I know people will be able to relate to the songs and stories because we’ve all experienced the highs and lows that make us who we are,” Neile explains.
Neile is a great storyteller and she weaves her stories, family pictures and great songs together. “I open with a clip of me dancing in one of my movies, and I sing ‘I Am What I Am.’ Of course I talk about Steve, but also my mother, children, all the important people in my life. I sing ‘Something in the way he moves, attracts me like no other lover’ for Steve because he was so special. For my mother I sing a song that’s a tribute to her Spanish heritage. There are sassy and fun songs, such as ‘When I’m not near the man I love, I love the man I’m near’ sung with gusto.”
What does Neile Adams love about performing? She reveals, “Narcissism is naturally part of dancers, we’re always looking in the mirror. When I couldn’t dance anymore, I could still sing. I sang on Broadway before they put microphones on everyone and you had to sing to the back rows. That’s all part of my life. I absorbed the love of being on stage very early in my life thanks to my mother who was a beautiful performer. Also, I saw The King and I on Broadway when I was young. I saw the dancers and said ‘I can do that.’ Years later I was back in that same theater in The Pajama Game dancing ‘Steam Heat’ choreographed by Bob Fosse.”
Among her other credits, she wrote the compelling bestseller “My Husband, My Friend” by Neile McQueen Toffel (aka Neile Adams), about her life with Steve McQueen and so much more. That’s what her The Lives of Me show offers showcasing beautiful songs and her stories that will touch a lot of hearts.
