TOLUCA LAKE — InForm Fitness, not your everyday average gym, has recently opened a location in no other place but Toluca Lake. But what is InForm Fitness really all about?
Their slogan is “Safe Efficient Exercise.” That, in a nutshell, is what the philosophy of this fitness center is all about — slower resistance training is safer and more intense creating muscle strength more than anything.
“You can’t have intensity without safety,” says Founder and Owner of InForm Fitness, Adam Zickerman. “To make it safe, we slow down the lifting speed. By lifting weights slowly, the muscle does all the work with no force on the joints and you get much more experience.”
The gym offers personal training and provides special cams on all of its machines in order to feel the resistance and slower motion effect, but that’s not all. The commitment for every customer is a once-a-week 20-minute workout session. Doesn’t sound bad, right?
Zickerman says several potential customers become skeptical of the commitment, but once they try it, they respond with an, “Oh, that makes sense.” Nine out of ten customers try it and stay with the program.
This philosophy may not sound ideal for some; however, Zickerman says, “There is no exercise for weight loss. It’s not about exercise — it’s about nutrition.”
Zickerman’s slow motion philosophy derived from an old 1980s technique inspired by Ken Hutchins. Many workout methods today are encouraging people to exercise without promoting muscle growth and they are doing it unsafely, says Zickerman.
Power of 10, Zickerman’s book about his workout philosophy instructs to lift weights up and down for ten seconds in each direction. “It’s more about intensity than endurance or volume … you’re killing two birds with one stone by [working out]slower [since]it’s safer and more intense,” Zickerman says.
In addition to their new opening in Toluca Lake, they are also located at: Manhattan, N.Y., Massapequa, N.Y., Leesburg, Va., Calabasas, Calif., and Santiago, Chile. The gym is also mobile, but as of now, the mobile gym is located in Manhattan.
InForm Fitness has been featured on Fox News, Today Show with Katie Couric, The View (Barbara Walters even tried out the gym’s machines in an interview and enjoyed it so much that she kept up her commitment). Vanity Fair, GQ, Newsweek, and Business Week are a few publications that have also featured them.
Zickerman will be holding a seminar on the health benefits of the Power of 10 method of strength training at the Toluca Lake location on Saturday, July 13, at 1 p.m. and on Monday, July 15, at 12 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. He will also be signing copies of his book.
