Operation Gratitude, an on-going mission to send letters and care packages to troops serving overseas, received some help from reinforcements at The Village at Sherman Oaks retirement community. This year, residents, families and staff joined forces to collect clothing, non-perishable food and financial contributions for the non-profit program.
In addition to collecting goods, the community’s creative writing class wrote letters to soldiers and the “Knitters by the Fire” club donated more than 50 handmade scarves. Another notable donation was made by a resident’s daughter, a dentist, who donated 100 toothbrushes and paste to the community’s efforts.
“We have a number of veterans living at The Village at Sherman Oaks,” said Lisa O’Laughlin, director of sales and marketing. “This project was especially meaningful to them. They really were excited to give back to their fellow servicemen and women.”
According to O’Laughlin, it took four drivers to take the community’s donations to the Operation Gratitude drop location.
“Our residents are already looking forward to the next opportunity to serve,” added O’Laughlin.
