The movie Sleepless in Seattle was an instant modern classic, and now the romantic comedy has been turned into a delightful musical. The Pasadena Playhouse will present the world premiere of Sleepless in Seattle—The Musical, running from May 24 to June 23.

Heading the impressive cast are stars Tim Martin Gleason as “Sam” and Chandra Lee Schwartz as “Annie” ready to take audiences on their romantic adventure.

Gleason is a natural for the role that Tom Hanks played in the movie. “Lots of people say I remind them of Tom Hanks, and I take it as such a compliment,” Gleason notes. But the young actor who embodies the sweet, romantic super-nice guy comes with an added bonus. Gleason has a magnificent singing voice that can give you goosebumps and shake the chandeliers, as he demonstrated during his long run in the national touring company of The Phantom of the Opera. “The Sam role is closer to me, because I’m more of a goofy, silly guy than a complete madman,” reveals the Burbank-based actor.

Gleason says the appeal of the Sleepless in Seattle story is “Magic. The whole story is predicated on the idea that if you are open to magic happening in your life, then magic will happen.”

The story centers around Sam, a widower and single father in Seattle. His young son Jonah calls into a talk radio show looking for a new mother and Sam winds up talking about his lost love on the program. Annie is listening and falls in love with Sam, even though she is across the country in Baltimore. The adventure begins when she sets out for Seattle. Meanwhile, Sam has to contend with an onslaught of women who have also been touched by his tender heart.

“It personifies the idea that there is a cosmic force in our world, and magic can happen if you let it,” Gleason insists. He says the show’s music also makes that magic happen, with great songs that will make you smile and touch your heart.

The show has the benefit of being written by Jeff Arch who co-wrote the screenplay with Nora Ephron. Music is by Ben Toth and lyrics by Sam Forman. The creative team also includes choreography by Spencer Liff (So You Think You Can Dance).

On stage, Gleason and Schwartz are surrounded by incredible talent that includes Joe West, Sabrina Sloan, Sachin Bhatt, Terron Brooks, Todd Buonopane, Jay Donnell, Cynthia Ferrer, Charissa Hogeland, Katharine Leonard, Robert Mammana, Teya Patt, Adam Silver, Yuka Takara, Lowe Taylor, and Carter Thomas, among others.

The stellar cast and creative team have combined their talents to bring the beloved story to the stage. Director and Playhouse Artistic Director Sheldon Epps says they all bring “their unique personal energy, artistry, and musical skill to this production which I hope will have a whole new generation fall in love with Sam and Annie’s romantic adventure.”
