Our bike ride on 10/23/10 started at Councilman Tom LaBonge’s office parking lot (10116 Riverside Dr. in Toluca Lake) and winded through our neighborhood for approximately 5 miles.

Do you feel like it’s high time to get involved? Feel like you want to get out there and be a part of your community? Get some fresh air? Maybe a little exercise? Good food? Fun? And be a part of something that helps our earth? Well…

The Greater Toluca Lake Neighborhood Council, along with newly reelected Councilmember Tom LaBonge and Deputy District Director of North Hollywood/Toluca Lake Alice Roth, is sponsoring Earth Day celebration activities at the Toluca Lake Farmers’ Market on Sunday, April 17, in the Wells Fargo parking lot located at 10225 Riverside Dr. The event kicks off with the second annual Earth Day Bike Ride, led by honorary Toluca Lake mayor and KNBC-TV weatherman Fritz Coleman.

The Bike Ride begins at 10 a.m. and will be led by Fritz and a police escort through the main streets of Toluca Lake and NoHo. The tour will stop at Fire Stations 86 and 60, at which participants get the opportunity to thank their local firemen and women for their invaluable contribution to the community. The ride will end up back at the Farmers’ Market, where Earth Day activities will be in full swing.

This year’s Earth Day promises to be bigger and better than ever. Though the bike ride is ages 13 and up, Earth Day activities are for all ages, including a petting zoo, bounce house, games, educational booths, prizes and an E-waste collection. The Department of Water and Power will be present to teach people about water conservation, solar panels and how to properly use recycling bins; there will be a tree adoption booth through the Hollywood/Los Angeles Beautification Team, where residents can adopt up to seven trees with easy planting instructions; various Toluca Lake restaurants will be giving out food samples of their finest dishes — and it’s all free!

Like last year, this year we will receive special help from Rob Benevidez and the LAPD, the LAFD, Councilman Tom LaBonge and Alice Roth — Deputy District Director of North Hollywood / Toluca Lake — for a safe ride. This year’s ride will be approximately 7.5 miles long.

Co-chairs of the Environmental Affairs Committee and originators of the Bike Ride, Daphne Kozek and Cornelio Gutirrez-Lozano both agree that Earth Day is vital to the community. Cornelio states:

“It’s about being more conscious of what we throw in the trash can, how we conserve water – the way we live our lives. Everything we’ll be doing is beneficial to the earth and our community, and that ensures a better future for later generations.” Daphne nods her head in accordance as she rocks her infant son.

She says:

“Growing up, my mom was a huge influence in being environmentally aware at a time when it wasn’t so easy. Now it’s much easier to be green. Earth Day is the perfect time to acknowledge and encourage that.”
