This year, Viewpoint School’s 110 seniors earned acceptance to 166 colleges and universities including such highly selective institutions as Stanford, Caltech, Yale University, Columbia University, Duke University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Williams College, University of Chicago, Swarthmore College, Northwestern University, University of Notre Dame, Pomona College, USC and the University of Virginia, as well as all of the University of California schools including UC Berkeley, UCLA and UC San Diego. In addition, colleges and universities offered the Class of 2009 over 2 million dollars in scholarship money.
Under the direction of Ms. Rhody Davis, former Associate Director of Admissions and Director of International Admissions at the University of Chicago, Viewpoint’s College Counseling Office is staffed with three full-time counselors. As Ms. Davis explains, the college application process at Viewpoint begins well before a student’s senior year. “We meet with students early on to help them begin researching and thinking about the college environment that is right for them. When students apply to colleges, they are well-prepared and have identified those schools that best meet their individual needs.”
The College Counseling Office also provides a unique first-hand look at the admission process from the colleges’ point of view at its annual Case Studies Program for juniors and their parents. This spring, Viewpoint welcomed nine admission deans and directors from Princeton, Caltech, University of Chicago, USC, Dickinson, Bard, Holy Names University, Pitzer College and the University of San Diego.
This informative event is followed every August by Viewpoint’s three-day College Counseling Summer Institute for rising seniors. During this extended counseling session, the School’s college counselors guide students through the application process, including how to interact with admission representatives and write a compelling essay. Every fall, more than 100 college admission representatives meet with students on Viewpoint’s campus, and each spring the school sponsors tours of colleges on the East Coast and in California.
Viewpoint provides daily round-trip transportation from the Sherman Oaks/ Encino/ Tarzana area, with stops along its route, giving families a less expensive and environmentally friendlier alternative to driving their own cars. “My daughter loves the bus,” explains Allison Segan of Sherman Oaks, whose Sixth Grade daughter Emily is finishing her first year at Viewpoint. “It was definitely a factor that enabled Emily to go to the school that was our first choice. The ride helps her decompress at the end of the school day and she is always in a good mood when she gets home.”
Viewpoint School is located at 23620 Mulholland Highway, Calabasas, CA 91302. It is a member of the California and National Associations of Independent Schools and the Cum Laude Society.
