Focused on resident health, happiness and longevity, Senior Resource Group communities like The Village at Sherman Oaks, place the utmost importance on total wellness. Recognizing the connection between resident wellness and spirituality, The Village at Sherman Oaks ensures that its residents’ religious traditions are well supported.

Most recently, the luxury retirement community honored one of the most culturally significant Jewish holidays – Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement). In addition to a service led by Rabbi Terry Lieberstein, The Village at Sherman Oaks prepared a traditional three-course meal that included chopped liver with hard-boiled eggs, poached salmon with fresh herb butter and roasted corn, and potato latkes.

From September 20-24, The Village at Sherman Oaks celebrated another Jewish tradition, the Festival of Sukkot. Residents, family members and Village at Sherman Oaks staff built a traditional Sukkot (a temporary dwelling like a hut) that was blessed by Rabbi Lieberstein and followed this by a resident wine and folk music social.

According to executive director Mike Soto, research shows that there is a strong connection between faith and good health. In fact, seniors who regularly attend religious services have been found to have healthier immune systems, have fewer physical disabilities, are able to cope with adversity better and in general, are happier.

“Cultural traditions like Yom Kippur serve as an important means to both physical and mental wellness,” Soto said. “It’s an honor to share these holidays with our residents, learn more about their culture and support their values.”

Residents enjoy traditional Jewish celebrations during holidays, including Yom Kippur.
