Village at Sherman Oaks Hosts Olympic Games for Residents and Staff
As part of The Village at Sherman Oaks’ commitment to provide an invigorating environment that stimulates the mind, spirit and body, the luxury retirement community hosted their own Olympic games, with more than 75 residents and staff members participating in the weeklong event.
The Village Olympic Games began with “opening ceremonies” on Monday, Aug. 30. The presidents of the Assisted Living and Independent Living Councils kicked off the ceremony with the official lighting of the torch, which was then followed by an all team scavenger hunt. Throughout the week, teams competed in a combination of physical and mental events such as golf putting contests, basketball, Wii bowling, “Name That Tune,” “Jeopardy,” cake decorating and pool relay.
Custom gold, silver and bronze trophies were awarded to top placing teams during the Closing Ceremonies on Sept. 3, which were hosted by resident, Walter Marusyn – a long-time educator and track coach who inspired a number of athletes to pursue professional sports careers and participate in past Olympic Games.
“This is an enjoyable way for residents to stay active and fit physically and mentally,” said Mike Soto, executive director of The Village at Sherman Oaks. “Plus, friendly competition brings about the most wonderful team spirit between our residents and staff.”
