Well folks, I was lucky to attend The Nancy Painter Home for Mother’s With Children, Inc. Fall Gala at the Sheraton Universal Hotel on October 15. Legendary actor Ed Asner was the recipient of their highest honor, The Michael & Betty Weinstock Helping Hands Award. The evening began with a silent auction and reception, followed by a buffet dinner. There were many members of the entertainment community in attendance, including original founding member of The Supremes, Mary Wilson.

Famed actress Marion Ross (Happy Days) presented to Ed, and Ross also co-stars with Asner in the up-coming comedy mockumentary Senior Entourage. Ed also has a new book he co-wrote with Ed Weinberger called The Grumpy Historian that he auctioned off “live” to help the charity. I generously donated memorabilia  to the silent auction.

The Nancy Painter Home changes lives and provides funding for safe, supportive family-oriented housing for homeless mothers and children where they can learn the skills that empower them to lead stable productive and independent lives. Especially since Thanksgiving is upon us, it makes one appreciate their blessings and a chance to give back to those in need.

The evening was hosted by Walter Painter, the Founder and Chairman of the Nancy Painter Home. Painter said, “This home created in my mother’s name stands for all those moms and their children who are willing to keep ‘carrying on’ just like my mother Nancy did.”

Asner was not only being recognized for his illustrious acting career, but for his humanitarian work for a wide range of social causes. Upon accepting the impressive award, Ed humbly stated, “This award does apply to me personally because I’m a father, and my own daughter Liza raised her children as a single mother.”

The lively Master Of Ceremonies was Mark L. Walberg (host of Antiques Road Show) and the headliner was the renowned musical theatre performer Jason Graae (Falsettos, Spamilton). He charmed the stellar audience with a hilarious and heartfelt 10 minute set.

Ed Asner will celebrate his 89th birthday on November 15th and is still going strong. On Saturday, November 18th, Asner will co-host, along with actress Wendie Malick, Stars & Shakespeare,  A Unique Benefit. It’s happening at Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon. This one-night-only special event will feature celebrity guests and board members reading and performing selected scenes and monologues from Shakespeare’s plays. Some of the actors include Stacy Keach, Steven Weber, Harry Hamlin, Peri Gilpin, Peter Jason and Dan Lauria.
