First, a word about Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 9th). That word is reservations. Unless you want to queue and stew, take notice that this annual occasion is one of the three busiest dine out dates on the calendar. The choices are immense and there are some guidelines. If there are youngsters (or oldsters with limited appetites) in the group, do a little research before you reserve by inquiring about family friendly discounts or special menus. It will not thrill Mom if you drain the gold card on her special day.

Try to take her somewhere special rather than your everyday eating places, somewhere with a touch of class and a distinctive chef-prepared menu. One great suggestion is that you venture to the charming and remarkable Maximilians’ Austro-Hungarian Cuisine, a serene shrine to elegant hospitality midst blooming garden patios where well-seasoned Chef Lazslo brings his touch to every distinctive classic dish.

A gastronomical attraction in the burgeoning NoHo Arts community, Maximilian’s smartly set tables and gracious service make any meal a special and surprisingly affordable occasion. To assure a festive aura there’s an eloquent wine and champagne selections with many vintages available by the glass to sip as you sup in this unlikely but sublime setting. Complimentary off-street parking is another welcome touch.

For good measure, Chef Lazslo is presenting a generous gift certificate to every mother to be used anytime and that beats a red carnation every time.

The gates swing wide at 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. Even on a holiday, fine dining is as much a matter of time as taste, so nobody is rushed through the gourmet fare that includes crispy roasted duck and the best Schnitzel on the planet. Seasonings are subtle with never more than a hint of salt.

I promise you a Westside prestigious experience but at Valley popular prices and a wholesome sensibility. More good news, youngsters will feast at half-price.
