There were a couple of apparent changes since The Palate last dined at Conrad’s landmark Glendale restaurant located at 820 N. Central Ave. I didn’t recall the conspicuous flat screen TVs —on but silent during a busy Saturday evening — and the dinner service staff was all male this time. Otherwise the popular place continues on its reliable, anytime, breakfast, lunch and dinner, five-page menu, trail.

One of the area’s most attractive and comfortable places has a kiddies’ menu and a full bar —something for everyone at sensible prices. A fried half chicken dinner is just $6.95 Mondays and Wednesdays and $7.95 regularly. Italian and Mexican specialties are featured as well as steaks, seafood, sandwiches, wraps and salads.

The Palate feasted on butterflied and deep fried huge, breaded shrimp, $14.95 with soup or salad, plus a crisp side of onion rings, $3.95. My companion opted for Conrad’s very inaccurate but healthful version of a Cobb salad, $10.95.

The service was a bit over-stretched but active and the self-parking is convenient — all in all, yet another happy Conrad’s occasion. I’ll be back soon.

Like most folks I am drawn to the easy-prep one-course meals in the frozen entrees lane at the supermarket. Most are over-priced and under-sized but now and then a convenience-food winner is in my quick meal freezer. A recent discovery was the Signature Cafe heat-and-eat Pasta Rigatoni ala Bolognese. It proved to be a rich, meaty sauce over tender pasta topped with Parmesan cheese —- a bit sparse, so augment cheese to taste. The label claims the delicious two-pound microwave dish is “family size.” Maybe so (as a side), but two people easily polished it off as a meal for about $3 each. Try it and report to
