Like the strippers in “Gypsy” proclaim, “You gotta get a gimmick!” No stranger to greasy controversy, KFC can now lay claim to the ultimate assault on fast foodism. Their breadless Double Down Sandwich is gooey, salty and unhealthy, and it’s selling like hotcakes with an estimated 10 million devoured as of this report date. What is the appeal of this unlikely salt bomb? Self-destruction comes to mind. KFC claims 11 secret condiments but the only taste that lingers on the palate is salt. A Double Down is loaded with about 1400 mg of sodium. The recommended daily intake by the American Heart Association is 1500 mg. You figure the odds. For the record, the innovation is topped and bottomed with fried or grilled chicken filets, the sandwich has a slice of grilled Monterey Jack cheese, two slices of bacon, a slice of grilled pepperjack cheese, and the Colonel’s secret salty herb sauce. Be sure to grab a fistful of paper napkins as the Double Down is a challenge to handle and a lot to swallow.

The Trattoria Amici at the Americana complex on Brand Blvd. in Glendale at 889 Americana Way has cooked up some happy hour budget treats served in the bar from 5-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday. $3.50 beers and $5 wines by the glass come with small plate appetizers — mini pizzas, crab cakes, or calamari, $5, and $8 pizzas. That’s easy to take in such attractive surroundings.
