The classic burger joint takes a giant step forward at the highly praised and promoted national chain dubbed The Counter. An upscale full-service concept claims over 300,000 “Build your Own Burger” possibilities.

The Counter has arrived at 10123 Riverside Dr. in Toluca Lake. Here’s how it works: Pick a protein of Angus beef, antibiotic chicken, turkey or a vegan blend of 11 ingredients, plus a choice of a dozen cheeses and 33 toppings. Add a sauce from 21 choices and one of four artisan-baked buns or a bowl of greens. If you hate making choices, go for a pre-designed signature burger or burger in a bowl.

Myriad choices beyond burgers extend to starters, sides, beverages and desserts. All items are ala carte. It’s a fun food experience if you really dive in. My personal review will appear in a subsequent column. Meanwhile, share your dine-out opinions with me at cableguygregg@sbcglobal.net.

The new Border Grill, created by partners-in-cooking and celebrated chefs Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken, is a modern, full service, straight ahead Mexican cuisine concept with mas appeal located at 445 S. Figueroa St. in downtown Los Angeles. Exceptional dishes include green corn tamales, guacamole, Yucatan pork and Baja ceviche quesadillas at lunch or dinner. Prices range from $7.50 for tortilla soup to $29 for flavorful short ribs.
