Despite eight years of day ‘n nite Mediterranean cuisine, Cedar House premises gleam like new. The surprisingly spacious corner mall restaurant at 4805 Whitsett Ave. in Valley Village serves a broad menu highlighting the owners’ Lebanese origins.
The extensive seven day lunch and dinner menu goes on for pages. Our appetizers were hit and miss with a tasty hummus topped with sautéed mushrooms, $6.95, and an unfortunate version of fried calamari, $9.95, for a small portion of over-breaded rock hard centers that went mostly uneaten apparently without our server’s notice.
My generous entrée was a deliciously marinated grilled salmon filet, $16.95, with an especially fine lentil soup starter and a nice rice pilaf, grilled tomato, and hummus with pita bread. My friend indulged in smartly seasoned strips of baked baby lamb shank with potatoes and veggies. His starter was a ground Tabouli salad with zesty spices, $14.95.
There are numerous $8.95 sandwiches including a tempting array of kabobs. All dishes are attractively presented.
The Cedar House is named for the national Lebanese tree and its likeness is part of the effective, almost theatrical dining room that is adaptable for banquets and special events. There’s live music on Friday and Saturday eves and beer or wine is available to all adult patrons. There’s adjoining self-parking and delivery is available within two miles with a minimum $15 food order.
