Henry’s Tacos, a neighborhood fixture at Moorpark Street and Tujunga Avenue in Studio City for more than 50 years, will close its doors for good later this month “pending a miracle” in the words of owner Janis Hood.
The minuscule 280 square foot “Googie-style” corner building is famous for its dependable old-fashioned American-style taco: seasoned ground beef, crunchy taco shell, traditional “orange” shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a side of hot sauce. Cash only, thank you.
Hood says that despite enjoying a still-thriving business, Henry’s has lost its lease.
Hood’s grandfather Henry started the enterprise in 1961, and the original menu and a no-frills ambience have stood the test of time. Last year, the restaurant was the subject of historical preservation status, but that effort failed.
“The landlord may want to bulldoze Henry’s and build something else. Needless to say I am heartsick that after 51 years, Henry’s may end for no good reason,” Hood laments on her Facebook page.
