Well folks, I recently attended the Smart Health LA launch party on the grounds of Valley Community Healthcare (VCH) at North Hollywood Center. I have been involved with VCH as a supporter and donor for the past several years.
Formerly called Valley Community Clinic, they serve more than 26,000 low-income men, women and children annually. I first learned about their work from actress Lily Tomlin who has been a big supporter and has been honored by them along with Jane Lynch, the late Garry Marshall, Hector Elizondo and Paula Poundstone.
The Smart Health LA launch was hosted by the talented Kevin Weiler, Director of HIV/AIDS Services at Valley Community Healthcare. He leads a compassionate team of professionals dedicated to the mental, physical and sexual health support and guidance of the LGBT community with the goal of improving overall health outcomes. According to Weiler, “We are a ‘one-stop’ medical home for the LGBT community.”
His staff provides HIV and Hepatitis C testing and treatment, STI (sexually transmissable infection) testing and treatment, mental health counseling, as well as referrals to dental, optometry, housing and more.
An intimate gathering of department heads, staff and invited guests enjoyed drinks and hors d’oeuvres. The keynote speaker was my friend, transgender actress Erika Ervin, better known as Amazon Eve on Season 4 of American Horror Story. Renowned psychic medium Patti Negri attended as a special guest. We were all treated to a unique live performance by singer-songwriter Alan Pinto and dancer/choreographer Joey Reed. The dynamic VCH VP/Chief Development Officer Judi Rose gave us a tour of the facility.
Besides spreading awareness about providing services for the LGBT community, VCH takes care of deaf children and adults. It’s a non-profit neighborhood network of comprehensive health centers dedicated to enhancing our valley community by consistently providing high quality, culturally sensitive primary medical care and related health services to those in need, regardless of their ability to pay. There are numerous ways for us as a community to donate to the great work VCH is doing and it’s important to give back.
Coming up—”Humor For Healthcare” a night of comedy, music, and sommelier wine and dessert pairing to benefit VCH. This event takes place on Thursday, October 19, 7pm, at Toolbox LA in Chatsworth.
