COSTA MESA, Calif.– The legendary Mariinsky Ballet and Orchestra (formerly the Kirov) open the 2012-2013 International Dance Season at SegerstromCenterfor the Arts in OrangeCountyOct.2-7 in an exclusive Southern Californiaengagement. For their eighth visit to the Center, 200 members of the Company, including dancers, musicians, and crew, will bring to life Mariinsky’s sumptuous and traditional production of Swan Lake. Among the most revered ballet companies in the world and with more than 250 years of history, the Mariinsky Ballet ofSt. Petersburg,Russia has presented some of the greatest dancers and choreographers.
Originally known as the Imperial Russian Ballet, the Company dates back to the 1740s, following the establishment of the first Russian dance school (now the VaganovaBalletAcademy) in 1738. Today, the Mariinsky Ballet carefully guards its legacy, and the Company’s renditions of Swan Lake, Giselle, and Paquita remain unrivalled. The premiere of Swan Lake took place in 1895 and dancing the leading role became a turning point in the biographies of many famous Russian ballerinas, including Marina Semenova, Galina Ulanova, Natalia Makarova, Alla Osipenko, and Galina Mezentseva. Now this role is danced by today’s generation of dancers, who infuse Swan Lake with a new life.
Included in the cast for the performances atSegerstromCenterfor the Arts will be Victoria Tereshkina, Alina Somova, Oxana Skorik, and Ekiaterina Kondaurova sharing the role of Odette-Odile and Vladimir Schklyarova, Evgeny Ivanchenko, Daniela Korsuntsev, and Timur Askerov as Prince Siegfried.
