Promise of Sumpin’ Special!

When I revealed that our luncheon destination was to be Frank’s just a few blocks from my friend’s Burbank address, he was incredulous. “Why Frank’s? That place has been around for decades and it’s nothing special,” he insisted. But the Palate was resolute, as I’d had nothing but positive reports ever since Jose Lopez, longtime chef at the fondly recalled Genio’s down the avenue a few blocks, took over the retro landmark. So I had to check it out.
The good news is that Frank’s has a fresh feel and a smartly expanded menu given hands-on preparation by the chef-owner. My dubious chum was rapidly transformed by the quality and presentation. Everything tasted as good as it looked starting with a hearty cup of fresh veggie Minestrone ($1.95) with thick slices of crusty sourdough bread followed by a plentiful platter of sautéed Sand Dabs, with choice of potato, pasta or fresh veggie, a midday bargain at $9.50 ($12.95 at dinner including soup or green salad).
Other appetizing specialties at Frank’s include fresh filet of salmon, beef ravioli or homemade lasagna, filet of sole, gnocchi, fried shrimp, grilled boneless trout, sirloin or New York steaks, chicken and pasta dishes, calamari steak plus an array of sensibly-priced sandwiches and salads.
Breakfast is served anytime with omelettes from $8.50 and several budget priced breakfast dishes at just $4.50. Sensing the times, Jose just introduced daily meal platters at $6.95 served from 11:30 til 9pm.
On Thanksgiving Day, Frank’s will feature a traditional choice of roast turkey or baked ham with all the trimmings ($13.95), half-price for kids under 12.
Our energetic and efficient server, Marie, has been a restaurant professional for 42 years—over two decades at Frank’s—and shows no sign of slowing down. “I’ll work as long as I’m still feeling good,” she promised. Good for her—and for us!
