Well folks, I went to Vitello’s Jazz and Supper Club in Studio City to check out the debut of actress/singer Sally Kellerman’s “Something’s Cool.” Kellerman, the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominated actress, who created the infamous role of Major Margaret “Hot Lips” O‘Houlihan in Robert Altman’s classic film M*A*S*H, is no stranger to Vitello’s, and will no doubt be there again. She sang many of her blues-oriented songs in her signature style like: “I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl,” “Love Potion #9,” “Don’t Feel My Leg,” and “I Want to Make Love to You.”
Sally mixes new songs with her more familiar tunes, so it is essentially a new show. She also previewed two new songs in the show, which she is developing as a national tour, and it was a treat to hear her new material. The show was broken up into sets, Act I and Act II. Kellerman opened with “How Sweet It Is” followed by “The Look of Love.” She then smoothly segued into “Without You”/”Walk on By.” The last two were “Spooky” closing off the first set with “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu.” Her rendition of “Spooky” was especially fun and clever.
Sally’s musicians were Ed Martel on piano for the first set, and Andy Langham on piano for the second. Her other musicians were Lyman Medieros on Bass, Craig Filo on Drums, and Sally made a costume change between sets while Andy played a Jazz Solo. Kellerman closed the show with a sultry version of “The Glory of Love,“ the theme song to my father’s film “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”
Many of my friends and colleagues were in attendance to eat dinner and see the show, including my friend and mentor Lily Tomlin, Robert Forster, Mike Stoller, Andrea Marcovicci, Susan Blakely, Cheryl Kagen, Jeff Sanderson, Bob Esty, and others.
Up-coming shows at Vitello’s include Frank Stallone on Feb. 24, the Tom Rainer Trio on Feb. 28, and Jimmy McHugh Music Salutes Black History Month on Feb. 29.
