Something Fishy This Time…

For decades I’ve observed the golden rule for dining out: “Never order fish or seafood at a steak house!” That’s an adage that’s still generally good advice “except when dining at Gary Bric’s Ramp,” where they evade tired, old rules.
Start with thick and steamy clam chowder ($3.75), ample appetizers include crisp fried clams ($6.95) or steamed clams ($14.95). Escargot is superbly prepared ($10.95), as are the Ramp’s version of crab cakes ($11.95). And a tempting jumbo shrimp cocktail is $10.95. The Palate generally orders two appetizers to be shared before the main event.
Serious seafoodies should savor an entrée of plump, golden deep-fried (or by request, gently sautéed) scallops ($19.95). I also favor their fresh broiled or sautéed Red Snapper ($15.95). And where else are you gonna find a full pound of fried frog legs ($18.95)? Australian lobster tail and Alaskan King Crab legs go at market price and, like all Ramp dinners, entrée prices include soup or salad plus a choice of rice or potatoes.
With only a couple of exceptions, the Ramp’s mouth-watering broiled steak entrées are 12 oz cuts priced twixt $20 and $24, while chicken and pasta dishes average around $15.
Add friendly attentive service, the full bar and sensibly-priced wine list to the equation and you have a cozy four-star dining experience at two-star menu prices. Small wonder their many regulars keep coming back for more.
Genial host Gary Bric is also the popular Mayor of Burbank. Gary and Shelly are omnipresent at the Ramp but it was a week-night off for the Bric team on my latest visit and the staff functioned in top form.
For the uninitiated, Gary Bric’s Ramp is located at 7730 N Hollywood Way just below Glenoaks Blvd. and directly by the Golden State fwy ramp. Open daily for lunch, they specialize in private party planning.

Positive Words from Washington

Not only has First Lady Michelle Obama launched a parental campaign against childhood obesity in the nation, the President will ask Congress to prohibit school vending machines selling sugary snacks or beverages and to provide lunch room nutrition to more students. It’ll be interesting to see how right-wingers resist such a challenge to free but fattening enterprise.
