Tony’s 2010 Oscar Nominations & Winners

This could be the worst year in the history of Hollywood for the quantity of outstanding films. It’s the flip side of 1939, often called the best year Hollywood ever had in terms of the number of high quality films produced. 2010 was an inauspicious time for the Academy to increase the number of nominated films from five to ten. I couldn’t think of ten films I saw that would qualify for my Oscar®.

However, I wish they had increased the lists of actors and actresses nominated because I saw enough terrific performances that I can’t limit my nominations to only five. Another advantage is that I could have Hailee Steinfeld as a Best Actress nominee. The Academy dumped her in as Best Supporting Actress, but she was in virtually every scene, had more lines than any other actor, and the movie was about her. Whom was she supporting? So why isn’t she in the Best Actress category? If any actress made any movie worth seeing, it was Steinfeld in True Grit. Without her it was mediocre.

These are not predictions, because I generally disagree with the decisions of the Academy. These are just the way I would have nominated (since they are my nominations, I’m not limited to five). My winner is indicated by an asterisk:

Hailee Steinfield in “True Grit.”
