It was a sunny afternoon costume ball on the Universal backlot for the Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times’ 19th annual Halloween Carnival presented by Jakks Cares. And like Cinderella going to the ball, the first person I saw was “Prince Charming.” It wasn’t someone in costume, it was ultra-handsome Gilles Marini. If ever there was a person who personified a charming prince, it’s Gilles, who has been a strong supporter of the wonderful Camp Ronald McDonald. “It is a great cause and I am proud to support the camp that helps the brave kids with cancer, and gives them the chance to smile.”
The leading man, best known for Sex and the City, Brothers & Sisters, and Dancing with the Stars, has been guest-starring on the top TV shows, most recently on Modern Family. He also sizzled filming an episode of Hot in Cleveland. At the Halloween event he was with his wife Carole and kids. He happily posed for pictures with everyone and said, “This is as much fun for the parents as it is for the kids.” To prove that statement Gilles enjoyed a ride down the big slide with his cute son Georges.
There were many other celebrities with their families strolling around the Trick-or-Treat lanes lined with food booths from L.A.’s top restaurants, games, and other goodies. Attending the Ronald McDonald Carnival has become a tradition for Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Cheryl Hines (now on ABC’s hit Suburgatory), who came dressed as Medusa. “I look scary, don’t I,” she said with a childlike grin. She reported that she screams when watching scary movies, and thinks of the experience “like hot sauce: It stings at first but then it’s so good.”
Also seen was Emmy-winning Camryn Manheim (The Practice), who recently locked horns with Kathy Bates on NBC’s Harry’s Law. She just finished a romantic-comedy called Jewtopia with Jennifer Love Hewitt (her costar on Ghost Whisperer). Costumed characters Shrek and Scooby-Doo came over to Camryn to give her a big hug, and she noted she loves everything about Halloween, “and I still scream like a little girl when I get scared.”
Glee’s fabulous Coach Beiste, Dot Marie Jones was on hand and admitted, “When I watch a horror movie I tend to laugh at the scary parts. But it’s nervous laughter.” Other adults enjoying the carnival were lovely Lisa Rinna and hubby Harry Hamlin, both as sassy pirates with their daughters Delilah and Amelia; Kyle Richards with her daughter Portia; Marcia Gay Harden with her three kids; Adrienne Maloff with husband Paul Nassif and three sons; and sweet Alison Sweeney, with kids Ben and Megan in tow.
Among the young stars signing autographs for the kids from Camp Ronald McDonald were Modern Family’s talented youngsters Nolan Gould and Rico Rodriguez, who was dressed as a magician. Rico’s actress-sister Raini dressed as a pirate and also helped out signing autographs.
Mixing and mingling with the happy campers was Make It or Break It’s Cassie Scerbo. Plus Shake It Up’s super stylish Bella Thorne, with her brother Remy and friends, Kenton Duty, and Roshon Fegan; plus Camp Rock 2’s Chloe Bridges; Blake Michael and Chris Brochu from Lemonade Mouth; and lovely and musical Zendaya Coleman who will be in the Disney Channel’s Frenemies teen flick with her Shake It Up castmate Bella Thorne in 2012.
Best known for his vampire movie Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Booboo Stewart was there with his stunning actress-sister Fivel Stewart (White Frog). And the kids from Teen Wolf, Tyler Hoechlin, Crystal Reed, and Holland Roden were also howling about how much fun the carnival was. Part of the fun were the live performances on stage.
But the real stars at the festive event were the awesome kids who have attended the camp. And it was fitting that some of the camp volunteers, who try to help the brave kids have some fun while they fight cancer, were wearing superhero attire along with other Halloween outfits thanks to sponsor Jakks Cares costumes. The wild and wonderful Universal character Beetlejuice was also helping everyone have a frightfully good time.
