Sneak Peak Emmys 2011: Governor’s Ball


Eeks! It’s almost Emmy time. And that means mega glam, plus gourmet cuisine. Imagine tasting a succulent A-list designed dinner at nine o’clock in the morning? Media were invited to a “first look” at Emmy’s 2011 Governor’s Ball that will be held on September 18. The lobby of the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences was unrecognizable.

Besides food, there were other treats. Waiters were made up by Dinair, who invented airbrush makeup. A select few received airbrush touchups, as well as hair bling extensions (golden strands of what looks like tinsel). Lots of glitz and glam for Emmy night!

Considered the largest annual formal dinner party in the world, the event is the first stop for Emmy nominees and winners, before they schmooze at other parties.

The menu, catered by Patina, consisted of salad (heirloom tomatoes, rosemary and cherry wood grilled asparagus, fried Yukon gold potatoes), entrée (filet mignon, gratin of macaroni with Vermont white cheddar, rainbow baby carrots, cipollini onions, caramelized broccoli emulsion, oxtail bordelaise and dessert (Duncan Hines milk chocolate brownie, chocolate blackberry cream, blackberry macaroon, chocolate rice crisp, honey sauce). As if that wasn’t enough, Duncan Hines provided chocolate lollipops filled with various kinds of cake.

This year’s theme is Mod Illusions. Yeah, baby. Austin Powers would feel very comfy here. It’s designed to take guests on a journey of various movements and multiple sensations with the color combination of black, white and (Emmy) gold. Living art still performers will be featured on stage, suspended overhead, encased within bars and amongst strolling guests.

There will be 3,500 guests, 10,000 pieces of china, 1,200 staff on site, 200 technicians, 180 cooks and 18 executive chefs in the kitchen, 85 managers and 45 bartenders at the Ball.

Just like a wedding reception, flowers can make or break a room. Kevin Lee, probably the most creative florist in town and owner of laPremiere Flowers, took time from his celebrity clients to design a masterpiece. “I measured every inch to make sure the centerpieces worked.” Talk about hands on!
