American Idol Season 10: It’s So Awesome, We Love Them All

Casey Abrams.

Awesome singers have made it into the finals on American Idol this season. They can really sing! All the top finalists for Fox TV’s American Idol Season 10 are amazing in a variety of music genres. It doesn’t seem like there’s a sour note among the remaining 11 finalists. And the judges obviously agree, giving the audience a wild surprise during last week’s voting results show.

No one was eliminated, because the judges used their “save” for the ultra-likeable and talented musician Casey Abrams. And producer Nigel Lythgoe announced that, for the first time ever, the top 11 finalists will travel the country as part of the “American Idols Live 2011” concert tour this summer.

Naima Adedapo.

In addition to Abrams, the top 11 are Naima Adedapo, Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, Stefano Langone, Jacob Lusk, Scotty McCreery, Paul McDonald, Thia Megia, Haley Reinhart and Pia Toscano. They have been America’s favorites, getting the top votes from the fans with more than 30 million votes cast.

Grateful to be chosen as “Wild Cards” in the semifinalist round, Naima Adedapo and Stefano Langone got to continue in the competition thanks to the support of the judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler when the top 24 were announced. Now they have a chance at the big prize.

Fox hosted a big American Idol party on the rooftop of The Grove’s parking garage, and I got to meet Ryan Seacrest and the young hopefuls. All were working the blue carpet as the finalists talked to the media. Lauren Alaina was gushing like a school girl. Well, the pretty 16-year-old is a sophomore from Rossville, Georgia. She’s thrilled to be in the competition, but she got exasperated when she kept hearing members of the press tell her that she reminds them of Kelly Clarkson. “That is just freaking me out,” she told me.

Scotty McCreery.

Scotty McCreery from Garner, North Carolina, loved being compared to the great country superstars. And the 17-year-old, with the deep voice that seems to come from his boots, revealed his goal is to stay true to his traditional country roots.

The rest of the group has roots from all around the U.S. Thia Megia, 16, is from Mountain House, California; Jacob Lusk, 23, lives in Compton; Naima Adedapo, 26, is from Milwaukee, Wisconson; and Paul McDonald, 26, lived in Nashville, Tennessee. Stefano Langone, 21, lives in Kent, Washington; Haley Reinhart, 20, from Wheeling, Illinois; and James Durbin, 22, is from Santa Cruz, California, and has a rock style that is following in the footsteps of former Idol finalist Adam Lambert.

Casey Abrams, 20, who lives in Idyllwild, California, told me he’s feeling great, although he had a scare during the semifinalists round, after being hospitalized with stomach pains. I kidded with him about the X-rays revealing a severe case of butterflies.

Casey said the experience only made him sing better and want it more. “When I sang ‘I Put A Spell On You,’ and had that reaction from the audience and the judges, it was great for my confidence,” he said, vowing to enjoy every minute he’s on the Idol stage. Casey’s been called a musical genius, and plays a number of instruments. And he just might be the coolest guy who plays the accordion.

There’s a lot of talk about Pia Toscano, 22, from Howard Beach, N.Y., being the frontrunner (according to Las Vegas odds makers). She’s got the most beautiful voice wrapped up in a charismatic package. Ironically she tried out for Season Six and got through to the top 40, only to be eliminated.

American Idol’s winner for Season Seven, David Cook has recorded the farewell song for the show’s 10th season. The song, chosen by American Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller, is a remake of Simple Minds’ hit “Don’t You Forget About Me.” It will be played each week as contestants are eliminated on the Thursday results show.

It’s a great season and anyone can win, since it’s the strongest line up of competitors since American Idol debuted in 2002. So with all that talent, Interscope Geffen A&M Records has been recording the finalists, making the songs they perform available on iTunes. Which makes all the hopefuls winners already.
