No one was lovelier than Betty White strolling the red carpet, ready to pick up her well deserved Life Achievement trophy at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The saucy “Golden Girl” showed everyone how beautiful you can look at any age with a smile on your face and a twinkle in your eye. Even George Clooney was gushing over her.
Without a doubt, Betty stole the show during the entertaining TNT broadcast of the 16th Annual SAG Awards, and kudos should go to executive producer Jeff Margolis for the entire stellar event. As she accepted the honor from Sandra Bullock, Betty made the star-studded crowd roar with laughter.
The highlights from her speech included Betty saying sincerely, “I should be presenting an award to you for the privilege of working in this wonderful business all this time. And you still can’t get rid of me. I was only 88 last Sunday, so I have lots more stuff to do.” Thunderous applause followed.
“Being in show business is like living in a small town,” she explained. “People greet you like neighbors, not like strangers. And through the mail you form friendships that last for years with people you’ve never even met. I often wonder about people who have some kind of passion. Something that they care so deeply about that it never fails to fascinate them. How lucky can I be to have two such passions, show business and animals. Actually, I may have more than two passions, but that’s none of your business.” More laughter rang out at the downtown Shrine Auditorium.
“Seventy-one years ago when I sang on an experimental thing called television, who would have dreamed it would culminate in an evening like this? Back when I first started, it would never have even occurred to me to imagine such a thing as this moment. And I still can’t believe I’m standing here. This is the highest point of my entire professional life.” And she’s still working! Later this year Betty will be seen in the comedy film “You Again,” with Sigourney Weaver, Kristin Chenoweth and Jamie Lee Curtis. Plus she’s signed on for a new TV Land series with Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick and Jane Leeves, called “Hot in Cleveland.” Betty White, what-a-gal!
Getting Red Carpet Ready
Before the SAG Awards, the town was busy with celebrities getting Red Carpet ready! A fun place to be was the “Celebrate! Luxury Lounge Honoring the Past and Present SAG Nominees.” Held at the Sonya Dakar Skin Clinic of Beverly Hills, celebrity jeweler Jason of Beverly Hills played host to “Glee’s” lovely Jennifer Aspen and Principal Figgins, aka Iqubal Theba. They went wild over the stunning jewels and accessory collection. Also, Bryan Batt from “Mad Men,” Brando Eaton from “Dexter,” Tony Denison, from “The Closer” and Carrie Preston from “True Blood” were seen sucking up the luxurious atmosphere created by Donna Wisdom’s DW & Company. Dawnn Lewis from “Hanging with Mr. Cooper” fame was hanging out along with Jazsmin Lewis and a lot of other pretty actresses being pampered and plucked by all the beauty experts from Nakeah Fuller’s fabulous All About Face Academy. Southern Girl Desserts were served along with Zendo cocktails and sweet indulgences from The Chocolate Bar from Encino.
Looking for celebrity volunteers, CoachArt is a wonderful worthwhile cause that was represented. It is a group that brings joy to the lives of chronically ill children by providing free lessons in the arts and athletics with studio or in-hospital workshop programs. Also putting their best foot forward, some girls had their pedicure tootsies in the comfy TOMS footwear, which deserves a shout out for helping in Haiti with generous donations, and always their philanthropic “One for One” policy. For every pair purchased, TOMS gives a pair of shoes to a child in need. That’s shoe-biz!
