Bob and Dolores Hope’s John Lautner-designed Palm Springs house went up for sale last week at the astonishing price of $50 million.
The stylish and expansive residence, which resembles an airport terminal circa the 1960’s, is a love-it or hate-it affair. Rumor has it that Bob Hope hated it, and that the project was completely Dolores’ taste.
The modern 22,000 square foot structure was completed after many years of construction in 1979 and overlooks the Coachella Valley. There are six bedrooms and 12 — count ‘em, 12 — bathrooms. The property also features the obligatory swimming pool and tennis courts.
The Hopes were longtime Toluca Lake residents and used the Palm Springs house as a getaway. Bob Hope died in 2003 at 100; Dolores died in 2011 at 102.
Tolucans are still wondering when the Hope’s mansion here on Moorpark Street will hit the market. A garage sale at the residence, reported in THE TOLUCAN TIMES late last year, cleared the way for a sale. According to daughter Linda Hope, no date has been set.
A Julian’s auction event of some of the Hope’s prized possessions is also expected to take place at that time.
