If you can’t make it to Broadway then Broadway Under the Stars will satisfy your musical cravings. The one-night-only concert will be “magical,” says Erich Bergen, star of Jersey Boys on stage and the movie. Bergen will perform along with Tony Award-winner and one of Broadway’s greatest voices Jennifer Holliday (Dreamgirls), Rogelio Douglas, Jr. (In the Heights), Danny Gurwin (Little Women), and Chad Kimball (Memphis) on Saturday, Aug. 16th at 8pm at the Ford Amphitheatre. Hosting the show is Obba Babatundé (Tony nominated for Dreamgirls). The musical feast is produced by Chris Isaacson Presents, directed by David Galligan, with musical direction by Gerald Sternbach.
So what will make the show so magical? Bergen says, “It’s the Ford’s stage. It’s always been a dream of mine to perform there. It’s one of the most beautiful settings in Los Angeles. It’s even more daunting than the Hollywood Bowl because while it’s large and outdoors, the audience is still intimate. It’s a small group of people under a big sky. Really magical.”
Bergen will be making some magic of his own with crowd-pleasing musical numbers. “For my set, I’ll be doing a little Cole Porter, a little Irving Berlin, and of course, some songs from my favorite movie musicals including Jersey Boys,” says the ultra-talented actor-singer who recently worked with director Clint Eastwood in Jersey Boys the movie. “It was a dream come true that I never realized I had dreamed about! Of course, I always wanted to be involved in the Jersey Boys film. And the whole experience from audition, to getting the job, to filming, to seeing it in a movie theatre… well, it’s all a blur at this point, a big, happy blur. It was such a pleasure to work with Clint. He’s the nicest man, and extremely collaborative. He doesn’t confuse the word director with dictator, as many do. He wants to know what the actor brings to the table first. He wants to know your instincts. That’s such a rare quality for a director to have.”
Broadway Under the Stars will feature songs from Cabaret, Jersey Boys, Pippin, The Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, Les Misérables and Wicked, along with new favorites from the 2013-14 Broadway season including Aladdin, Rocky, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.
