In 2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped from her bedroom at knife-point. Her kidnapper, Brian David Mitchell, was also the family’s handyman. She survived nine harrowing months as Mitchell’s sex slave before the police identified and released her. Ten years later, Smart told TIME Magazine, “Had I been trained [in self-defense]I would have known that I had more than just the choice of being killed in my bed or going with him … I may have been confident enough in my skills to fight back.”
As a parent your worst fear is any harm coming to your child. Consider the following statistics on children abducted by nonfamily members:
- Every year, an estimated 58,000 children are reported missing and abducted by nonfamily members.
- 46% of children abducted by nonfamily members are sexually assaulted.
- 31% of children abducted by nonfamily members are physically assaulted.
- 40% of children abducted by a true stranger or slight acquaintance were killed. Over 76% of these victims were murdered within 3 hours of the abduction.
Since opening my Los Angeles Kung Fu school California Academy of Martial Arts in 1995, I have taught self-defense and anti-abduction to thousands of children whose parents didn’t want them to become a sad statistic. I have also taught the art of Wing Chun Kung Fu, the style of Ip Man and Bruce Lee, to thousands of adult & teenage students. A number of my past and present students of all ages have used these skills to survive violent assaults. Some of these attacks even involved guns, knives, or multiple attackers.
I believe that every child deserves to know how to protect him or herself from violent crime. I also believe that every parent should take responsibility for providing this knowledge and training to their children. Enrolling your child at California Academy of Martial Arts can be the first and most important step toward preparing your child for all of life’s possibilities.
