The Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council, American Legion Post 193 and the Horace Heidt Big Band Foundation are presenting the (free) Fourth Annual Memorial Day “Concert in the Park.” This concert will commemorate the 63rd Anniversary of the Gift from American Legion Post 193 of the 10-acre property that became the Van Nuys/Sherman Oaks War Memorial Park at Huston Street and Hazeltine Avenue in Sherman Oaks. “A Day in the Park” program will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. with the concert from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. There will be a dance floor for those who love to dance to big band music, ending with a big band dance contest! Horace Heidt, Jr., leads the musical tribute with his All-Star Big Band and with vocalists Bill A. Jones (Glee), Kae Butterfield, Tiba Edelmann, Gary Stockdale, Deborah Pearl, Pat Walmisley and more!
These annual concerts are patriotic salutes that touch the lives of so many that other companies, organizations and individuals contribute to help with the expenses of such a ceremony. Some of these are: Ralph’s Grocery Store; Galpin Motors; Bessolo Haworth & Vogel; Morton’s Steakhouse; SAS Shoes; Gaveet Construction; Rubin Turner, Esq.; Stanley’s Restaurant; Christopher Thomas; M/M Robert Yeaton; Oliva Trattoria; Curves; Buckley School; Jinky’s Café; Mary Ann’s Tennis; Corky’s Restaurant; Signs of L.A.; Prime Italian; Victor’s Tailor Shop; Marquez Tile; Simon’s Sun Valley Cleaners; Fantastic Cut; and S & J Painting — to name a few.
We are grateful to American Legion Post 193 for donating the land for a park, and to the City of Los Angeles for a War Memorial Monument in Sherman Oaks, dedicated to the memory of our fallen heroes, to our heroic veterans and to our current brave and committed American military.
