After Super Bowl XLV is over, and either the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Green Bay Packers get crowned gridiron champs, stay tuned for an episode of Glee this Sunday, February 6. It will be extra special, reported Glee stars Matthew Morrison and Chris Colfer.
Fox TV has given its ultra-popular and critically acclaimed musical series the most desirable slot in broadcasting. And all the actors are excited about the big post Super Bowl show.
At an interview session with the “Funny Men of Twentieth Century Fox,” Morrison and Colfer were able to drop a few hints and tease us about the Super Bowl episode.
“There will be a football involved. And a big performance of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller,’ plus a lot of pyrotechnics, fire, cannons, shooting people out, you know,” Morrison said.
Colfer revealed, “I’m surprised there were no fatalities after we shot that episode, because it was insane. It’s by far the most expensive episode we’ve ever done. The production did go way overboard. There was one scene, I kid you not, they had two ambulances on standby, which is two more ambulances than they usually have. It’s a big production.”
Morrison added, “This whole Glee thing has been one of those things, kind of like ‘how can we top ourselves and how can this get any bigger?’ I don’t think it can get any bigger than the Super Bowl. It’s obviously one of the most coveted spots on TV. But it probably will. I don’t think our writers were ever afraid to do anything.”
In the highly anticipated Super Bowl-theme episode, Mr. Schuster (Morrison) and Coach Beiste (Dot Marie Jones) devise a plot to bring together the warring glee club and football team factions. The McKinley High School football team will be preparing for the state championship. Meanwhile, Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), desperate to win cheerleading Nationals, launches a dangerous plan to bring home a trophy. And the big musical number of the show is Michael Jackson’s iconic hit “Thriller.” The show will also cover songs by the country group Lady Antebellum, Black Eyed Peas and Katy Perry. Singer Darren Criss, a new Gleek favorite for his recurring role, will also be featured.
All the stars deserve credit for their hard work on the show. They include Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Diana Agron, Mark Salling, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Amber Riley, Heather Morris, Naya Rivera, and Chord Overstreet, playing the kids in the New Directions glee club.
Playing their teacher, Morrison said he doesn’t mind the hard work involved with putting together big musical numbers on the show each week, “because I was a fan of the old variety shows, like Jackie Gleason, Carol Burnett, and the Smothers Brothers shows. And it’s nice that an hour of music is back in a different sort of way. It’s thriving, and it’s so great to be a part of that.”
Glee also has a Valentine’s Day themed show coming up. On Tuesday, February 8, Glee presents the “Silly Love Songs” episode. Although love is in the air at McKinley High, when the glee club sets up a kissing booth for Valentine’s Day things don’t go as planned and hearts end up getting broken.
For all the Gleeky fans who might have missed a few episodes this season, “Glee Season 2, Volume 1,” DVD set has just been released by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. It has the first ten episodes from season two, including the memorable “Britney/Brittany” episode with Britney Spears, and “The Rocky Horror “Glee’ Show.” It also has never-before-seen footage, including a bonus song recorded exclusively for the DVD release, making it very special.
Happy Birthday, Frank Barron
Now on the personal side, let me give a shout-out to my husband Frank Barron, who celebrates his birthday Feb. 5. He’s been my Valentine for 30 years. And I know everybody at The Tolucan Times thinks he’s a sweetheart, too. I love you.
