Attention independent filmmakers: Happy Independents Day is a networking conference being held Sunday, April 17. It is great for young filmmakers who want to get started and absorb the knowledge of how to get their indie productions off the ground. The jam-packed eight-hour professional platform serves to build a creative community and helps gather resources while networking.
Event creator Crystal Callahan says, “It’s a way to connect in an authentic, personal way, meeting with comrades in the creative community. The value of the event for indies can be summed up by saying, ‘Networking equals an increase in creativity, contacts and ultimately, cash flow.’ That is a clear circle that has happened for so many.”
Callahan emphasizes that the program responds to the indies’ real needs.
“We have four speakers who will address the issues that are important, such as production insurance, equipment rentals, film production, sales and financing.” That’s certainly worth the time and price of admission — establishing personal networking in the creative community — because Callahan wants all the indies to know, “We are stronger together.”
The conference event starts at 4 p.m. Activities such as live music, networking opportunities and a film fest take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Complimentary food and drinks will be served courtesy of Camarena Tequila & Taco Truck. Then from 9 until midnight, it turns into a celebration that becomes a networking dance party. The Happy Independents Day team has put together this inaugural event to “connect, entertain, educate and inspire our production community.” It’s April 17, from 4 p.m. to midnight, at Monk Space L.A., Raw Underground Warehouse, located at 4414 W. 2nd St. in Los Angeles. Tickets are $15 for early registration; after April 14, it’s $20. Offered exclusively to readers of The Tolucan Times, a discounted rate of $12 is available.
