By Raul Castillo, Class of 1988
I find it surprising that many folks don’t think about Los Angeles Valley College (LAVC) the way they do about CSUN, UCLA, or USC with annual donations or membership to the alumni association. After all, LAVC is where many of us began our college education. The quality of the education was terrific especially given the value.
I had a great experience here and made new friends with students as well as outstanding teachers like Jim Marteney and Dick Raskoff, to name just two. LAVC was my educational springboard and helped build the confidence I needed to pursue my academic and career goals.
I found myself happily returning to LAVC a number of years later to run its Foundation. I was asked to reconnect with alumni and former students. I’ve met a number of people who attended from the 1950s to today; all had a wonderful experience. The Foundation has made strides in reconnecting with its alumni. However, there are so many out there that we still need to hear from. Community colleges like LAVC are currently experiencing the fallout of tough economic times.
We are so thankful to those who have returned to see old friends and who are supporting today’s students via scholarships. For those of you who are also grateful for theValleyCollegeexperience, we sure would like to hear from you and get your support by way of time, talent, or treasure.
