I was honored to have presented/produced and hosted the official U.S. Premiere of the new Australian documentary FALLOUT for the 5th installment and 5th Anniversary of my cinema series “Kat Kramer’s Films That Change the World.” I am following in my father, Stanley Kramer’s footsteps by showcasing feature films and documentaries with social issues. I like to combine film premieres with “think-tank” salons, a unique gathering of high-profile celebrities, activists, students, and the media to help spread awareness. That is the best way to educate an audience. The support has been tremendous since the series was founded in 2009 at Sunset-Gower Studios.

This film FALLOUT by Lawrence Johnston and Peter Kaufman was a perfect fit because 2013 marks my father Stanley Kramer’s Centennial, and FALLOUT chronicles the making of my father’s classic film On the Beach in Melbourne, Australia starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, Anthony Perkins, and Donna Anderson. FALLOUT focuses on British novelist Nevil Shute moving to Australia writing the classic book On the Beach and how my father brought it to the big screen. It also traces the origins of “the bomb” and is very relevant today.

My mother actress/producer Karen Sharpe-Kramer appears in FALLOUT along with actress Donna Anderson (who made her screen debut in On the Beach) and Heather Mayfield (Nevil Shute’s daughter) and they joined us at the premiere.

The world’s leading anti-nuclear activist Dr. Helen Caldicott also appears in FALLOUT, and experienced On the Beach when she was a teen-ager living in Melbourne. The impact of the warning message set her on her life’s course.

We were all blessed that Dr. Caldicott was the keynote speaker before the film, and was introduced by her longtime friend Lily Tomlin. The Legendary Ms. Tomlin has Hosted two other premieres for “Kat Kramer’s Films That Change the World” and having her participate for a third time was an ideal way to celebrate.

Other Hosts included Academy-Award and Emmy-Award winning actor Louis Gossett, Jr., Activist and star of The Cove Ric O’Barry, and actor and comedian Rick Overton. They all served on the “power panel” I moderated after the film. It was a thrilling experience having my mother join Lily Tomlin and Dr. Caldicott on a panel.

Following the panel, Dr. Caldicott personally signed some of her most famous books such as If You Love This Planet, A Desperate Passion, and Loving This Planet with proceeds going to the Helen Caldicott Foundation. Dr. Caldicott was the subject of the Academy Award-winning Documentary short subject film, “If You Love This Planet.”

Other celebrity supporters at FALLOUT included George Chakiris, Glynn Turman, Jerry Mathers, Marsha Hunt, Beverly Todd, and Lois Aldrin.

It was an historical evening with individuals who share humanity and genuinely “Love Our Planet.”
