The Toluca Lake United Methodist Church has a new pastor and a new mission: to become L.A.’s COMEDY CHURCH! Their new pastor, the Rev. Jane Voigts, is a former professional stand-up comic and improviser from Chicago, and she brings to the pulpit a huge passion for building bridges between humor and spirituality.
“There is actually a lot of humor embedded in the Bible, and it should be the foundation of our faith life,” observes Voigts. “Laughter is the ultimate language of grace. Think about something from your life that makes you laugh. Chances are it involves something you did that was dangerous or inappropriate, and yet it didn’t kill you. The universe – God — is surprisingly kind. And discovering that can relax us, fill us with joy, and give us strength to heal our lives and our world.”
Voigts further notes, “Christmas at Toluca Lake UMC offers special opportunities in this regard for anyone and everyone – even grouches — to come and check out!”
On Sunday morning, Dec. 23, their “normal” 10:30 a.m. worship service is going to be a Christmas Variety Special, harkening back to the TV holiday specials of yesteryear. Worship will playfully include puppets, ice skating, and special guest stars.
On Monday evening, Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, Toluca Lake UMC is offering It’s a Wonderful Candlelight Service at 9 p.m. There will be carols, scripture readings, candlelight, and a holiday movie shown in the sanctuary after worship for all who wish to stay.
Toluca Lake UMC, the Comedy Church, is located at 4301 Cahuenga Blvd. For more information, call (818) 761-5897 or visit tlumc.com.
