Hollywood really is a magical place. I’ve been living here for a year now and I still haven’t gotten used to celebrity sightings. It’s crazy to think that these stars are just out walking around like regular people. And even crazier to think that I have the guts to approach them!
The other day I was at a Coffee Bean waiting for my friend Will. He’s thinking about dropping out of school to pursue his acting career full time and wanted to talk it over. Will’s had a hard time getting into auditions, and has been too shy to ever actually get on stage, but he’s dreamt of being in movies since he was a kid and he refuses to let go of that dream. Guess I’m not the only one who thinks Hollywood is magical after all. So I’m sitting there waiting for Will, looking at all the beautiful Californians around me when I spot none other than Rainn Wilson aka Dwight Schrute from The Office! Needless to say, I was starstruck. A few minutes passed and Will showed up with some new headshots ready to show off, but I had bigger fish to fry.
I had to find a way to approach Rainn without seeming like a creep. As Will told me about school, I ran through my possibilities to get Rainn’s attention. I could “accidentally” knock his drink over as I passed by his table, I could make an obscure reference to The Office, I could just go up and say I’m a big fan, I could pretend like I thought he actually was Dwight and he may appreciate the improv, I could act like I didn’t know he was a celebrity, I could do any of these things. I told Will to hang on a minute and walked over to Rainn’s table. He was talking to some guy I didn’t recognize, probably a producer or director, and they were pretty focused on the conversation. I just stood awkwardly next to their table for what seemed like an eternity and finally Rainn Wilson aka Dwight Schrute from The Office turned his head and looked at me! I really wanted to write that sentence. He said “hi” and I said “hi” back. I was so nervous I totally freaked and just walked back to my table with Will. We both had a big laugh over the whole thing.
It looks like Will is going to follow his dreams and drop out of med school. Who knows, maybe one day some nervous kid will awkwardly approach Will’s table at a coffee shop hoping for an autograph!
