Having the courage to reach out and grab your dreams at any age is a remarkable trait. To do so in your seventies is simply inspiring.
While many sit back and ponder memories of their youth, the residents at the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments are making new ones. Angela McEwan is one of those residents.
Recently appearing in the Oscar nominated film Nebraska, McEwan is spending her retirement years chasing down auditions and fulfilling a childhood dream of becoming an actress.
She moved to the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments to be closer to her auditions, and found herself inspired by this tight-knit community. It was here that she was able to reignite her passion for acting, and she has successfully landed roles in popular TV shows such as Days of Our Lives, New Girl, and Parks and Recreation, among others.
As a Los Angeles native, McEwan spent much of her youth acting in community theater, and even studied theater arts at the University of California, Los Angeles.
“As a child, I idolized Shirley Temple and always dreamt of the day that I would see my own face on the big screen,” McEwan notes.
Although life would take her on a long road to get there, McEwan would eventually find this dream realized.
Before moving to the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments, McEwan spent a few months in Guadalajara studying Spanish, and lived in Nicaragua for several years with her husband and two children.
Upon her return, McEwan obtained her masters in Spanish from the University of California at Irvine and started working for the local courthouse where she spent the next 23 years working as a Spanish to English interpreter for the Court.
“After 23 years with the Long Beach Courthouse, it was time for me to truly delve into my acting career and dedicate myself to my craft,” explains McEwan. “I’ve always had a love affair with acting, and when I retired I knew I had to seize this opportunity.”
Moving to the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments was a big step in making this dream come true, and McEwan has never looked back. She is now surrounded by like-minded individuals who are also developing their passions – in art, sculpture, dance, theater, digital arts, and more. The apartment community offers these arts classes, as well as social activities, to residents free of charge.
McEwan proves that age is merely a number, and that in the quest to conquer your dreams, the possibilities are endless. She is an excellent example of the amazing NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments culture, where it’s never too late to start chasing your dreams.
