Academy Award-winning actress Helen Hunt, who graduated from Providence in 1981, received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the film, The Sessions, and author Eloise Klein Healy, a graduate from PHS in 1961, was named the first Poet Laureate for the city of Los Angeles.
Hunt, who studied acting at the age of eight-years-old, rose to fame for her Emmy Award-winning role as Jamie Buchman on the sitcom, Mad About You. She went on to act in numerous films, including As Good As It Gets, which she received an Oscar for, opposite Academy Award-winning actor Jack Nicholson. This is Hunt’s eighth Golden Globe nomination; she is already the winner of four Golden Globes.
After graduating from Providence High School, professor and poet Klein Healy attended Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles. She graduated in 1965 and began graduate school, receiving her Master’s of Art degree in American Literature. From 1970 until 1979, she taught at Immaculate Heart College where she was also Director of Admissions for three years. In 1981, she taught at CSUN in the English Department. She was introduced to Antioch University Los Angeles and taught in the BA Program until she founded the MFA in Creative Writing Program in 1997. In 2006, Klein Healy retired from teaching and founded Arktoi Books that year, her imprint with Red Hen Press. She has published six books of poetry and her seventh book, A Wild Surmise: New and Selected Poems, will be out in 2013.
