Academy Award winner Shirley Jones performed hits from Oklahoma and Carousel, Grammy winner Helen Reddy sang “You And Me Against the World,” and rapper Chuck D, a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee, recited an exclusive poem — all in tribute to former President Jimmy Carter and first lady Roslyn Carter who attended a special gala dinner and show in their honor at St. Genevieve High School in Panorama City last week.
Dan Horn, the principal of award-winning St. Genevieve’s, a private, coed Catholic high school, developed a relationship with the Carters when Roslyn Carter responded to a fan letter Horn wrote to her after reading her autobiography. The Carters became strong supporters of St. Genevieve with President Carter praising it as, “One of the best high schools in the world.”
In gratitude, students helped raise money for the Carter Center’s efforts to eradicate disease in third world countries, and the school thanked the former first couple with “Dinner with the Carters” — a private, invitation-only event on Feb. 19.
The banquet was presented with the help of the parents of St. Genevieve, and featured appetizers, a full course meal, dessert, and wine. The Carters also attended a worship mass that preceded the dinner and show, and featured music from “The Valiant Voices,” the school’s highly rated choir.
