North Hollywood, CA. April 2012 – Most of us are all too aware of the urgent and continuing need for blood donors. Someone needs a blood transfusion in the United States about every two seconds and volunteer donors are the only source. Unfortunately, adults often don’t participate if they are unable to donate blood.
Welcome to a new kind of blood drive.
The Wesley School is a K-8 private school located on the grounds of the First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood. Both groups are joining together with The American Red Cross to host a new kind of all-inclusive blood drive, one that honors those participants who are unable to donate blood themselves. Here’s how it works:
Honor Program: Special certificates will be issued to donors, allowing them to honor a person they choose, like their children, or the person who recruited them, or someone who cannot donate for themselves.
Rewarding Recruiters: In lieu of incentives offered to donors, incentives will only be offered to those who recruit donors, allowing universal participation. Student incentives include t-shirts, class parties, community service credit, and a campus art campaign that visibly promotes recruitment.
Educating Participants: Donors will be offered special information regarding why blood donation is important and why certain people are unable to donate.
“Our theme is ‘Include Inform Inspire,’” explains Rich Meyers, Committee Chair. “Include encourages everyone to participate. Inform reflects our efforts to teach others why blood donation is so important and why certain people can’t donate. Inspire hopefully engages our community to save as many lives as possible.”
“We’re thrilled to be pioneering efforts to raise awareness about inclusivity and to welcome everyone who wants to participate,” adds John Walter, Wesley’s Head of School.
