Actor/writer James R. Mathers was born in Seattle, lived in LA in the early ‘60s, worked in aerospace and earned a law degree in ‘68. In the 70’s James found his true calling as an actor, and worked in San Francisco at the One Act Theater, Magic Theater and the Bay Area Playwright’s Festival with writers and performing artists, John O’Keefe, Sam Shepard, George Walker and others.
He earned his SAG card in ‘79. In NYC in the ‘80s James was active with the Manhattan Class Company, and performed in many Off Broadway and Regional productions including Curse of the Starving Class, Happy Birthday Wanda June, Desire Under the Elms, Our Town, and The Lion in Winter.
James returned to LA in 1990, and was living in Hollywood with his wife and two cats at the time of his death. Acting credits include The Right Stuff, Fire Down Below, Cold Case, ER, Ray Donovan, all the Soaps, copious cable, internet and xBox/PS games.
In collaboration with his wife Dallas, he started the Writers Group which meets in Studio City, and wrote screenplays landing options from William S. Gilmore, Fox Searchlight, and Simon Channing-Williams. In 2011, James began writing e-books, two of which, Cindy’s Eyes and Henry & Dad, were published and are still available for download. He was working on a third book at the time of his death.
James is survived by his wife Dallas, his son James, his sister Joan Stanley, nephews, John, Mark and Kevin, nieces, Carla and Theresa, and his beloved granddaughter, Luna Magic and her mother Kelli.
There will be a memorial service for James on Sunday, August 3rd at 3:00pm, at the Hollywood United Methodist Church in Hollywood.
