Fourth Nuthouse in September Speaks One Man’s Truth
Performing is Radomir Vojtech Luza’s life, allowing him to confront issues, understand life situations, and grow. He is also a renaissance man – activist, actor, singer, standup comedian, poet – an agent for change hoping to inspire and educate others.
Luza’s fight to preserve freedoms and truth comes from his immigrant parents, fleeing repressed Communist Czechoslovakia for release and opportunity in New Orleans. Education in Jesuit schools there introduced him to literature, and the poem, “The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner,” inspired Luza to become a poet.
Developing his poetry and playwriting skills in college, Luza has published over forty poems in journals, written twenty-four books, been featured over seventy times at readings, organized and hosted or co-hosted 13 readings across the country, and produced four spoken word CDs set to music. He has recently published a book of poems called Fourth Nuthouse in September, helping him resolve both his mixed feelings about Los Angeles and his pain while at the Del Amo Mental Hospital in 2006, hopefully shining a light on mental illness and its stigma.
Luza’s nearly three weeks in the hospital were tough, confined and surrounded at all sides. Having to write secretly and employing the cracks in the door for light, he recorded his pain, anger, and frustration at the disintegration of his marriage, making sense of what was happening in often descriptive and imaginative poems.
“Discharge” uses rhythmic rhyme as it sums up Luza’s realization that he must solve his own problems. “Last Poem” examines the solitariness of writing, while “Genius” describes how difficulties can inspire great work. Luza employs colorful description and language to reveal his feelings.
One of Luza’s life missions is showing how people can employ poetry to learn to mend and heal themselves and the world, just as he has.
