Leon Saliba, 102, Has Birthday at Fire Station 102
T13-Community News - leonsaliba102Local Toluca Lake resident Leon Saliba celebrated his 102nd birthday in style recently, gathering together with family members and Councilmember Tom LaBonge to mark the occasion at Fire Station 102 in Sherman Oaks. (Saliba spent his 101st birthday posing for photographs along the Hollywood Freeway, US-101.) Watch out, Fire Station 103 in Northridge, Leon Saliba is coming your way! Congratulations, Leon!

Ledge Avenue to Close for Six Months
Ledge Avenue will be closed to through traffic for approximately six months, lasting through Aug. 13, 2013. The Ledge Avenue overpass at the 134 freeway will be widened, and a soundwall will be constructed along the south side of the 134 freeway from Cahuenga to Placidia. The work will also require intermittent closures of lanes on the 134 freeway and ramps at Cahuenga Boulevard. Most of this work will be performed at night. Coldwater Canyon to Close for Five Weeks
T13-Community News-coldwatercanyon2 Coldwater Canyon Avenue will close for five weeks beginning March 23, as LADWP replaces a 100-year-old pipeline with a new welded steel pipeline. Above, Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Councilmember Paul Krekorian, and Councilmember Tom LaBonge hold a piece of the original pipeline installed in 1914 at the direction of William Mulholland. Coldwater Canyon Avenue will be closed from Ventura Boulevard to Mulholland Drive Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. through April 25. One lane will be kept open in each direction at all other times.

City Says Goodbye to LADOT’s Yadi Hashemi
T13-Community News-yadihashemiCity employee Yadi Hashemi retired after a distinguished 28-year career with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation this past week. Pictured, Councilmember Tom LaBonge and Councilmember Bill Rosendahl stand with Hashemi in honor of his work. Hashemi played a vital role in preparing traffic detour plans during the construction of the Metro Blue and Red Lines. He also served as an immigrant rights organizer. Retiring as Acting Senior Transportation Engineer of the Permits Parking Division, Hashemi plans to hike and organize for immigrant rights in his retirement. Congratulations, Yadi!

Gene Bua Memorial Tribute & Celebration
There will be an extraordinary gathering to celebrate the life of Gene Bua. He will be remembered via a 2 hour musical and multi-media tribute to his career ranging from Broadway Star, to CBS & NBC huge soap opera star of the 1960-70’s, to owning The Gene Bua Acting For Life Theatre in Burbank for many years.

The Tribute and Memorial is a two-act musical, Anything Can Happen, written by his wife, Toni Bull Bua. The evening will be filled with performances by students and alumni who have been devoted to Gene for years, singing the songs Gene composed, along with speeches given by about a dozen people, who were profoundly touched by Gene’s life.
